London homes to receive sound insulation
09 December 2011

Properties in the
vicinity of London City Airport (LCY) could be set to benefit from
the installation of
sound insulation under a new local authority initiative, it has
been revealed.
Up to 3,500 homes in the area could be eligible for free home
improvements under the new scheme, which is open to any property
which suffers from noise pollution levels in excess of 57
decibels.
Peter Henson, partner at noise specialists Bickerdike Allen, which
works with LCY, said: "The threshold of eligibility for sound
insulation [is] the same since 1991, when permission was given to
operate jet aircraft."
It follows an announcement that noise monitors are to be placed in
Tower Hamlets and Greenwich, with a focus on ensuring local
residents are not adversely affected by the activities of the
airport.
There are a number of methods for insulating homes against unwanted
sound pollution, with the installation of a quilted material behind
cavity wall spaces one of the most popular and effective. This
helps to absorb sound, while also adding an extra layer of heat
insulation at the same time.
Knauf Insulation provides sustainable insulation solutions for loft
insulation, cavity wall insulation and solid wall
insulation.
