Olympics chance to break down construction industry gender barriers
03 December 2008

Hosting
the Olympics in London 2012 could be good for breaking down
barriers in the construction industry, according to Olympic
Minister Tessa Jowell.
The minister joined in at a taster session held at the Plant
Training Centre at the Olympic Park, called Women into
Construction.
Through the initiative, funded by the Olympic Delivery Authority,
women will be given opportunities to develop first-hand experience
about aspects of the construction industry.
These include how to use diggers and other equipment and training
towards building infrastructure ahead of the Games in 2012.
Ms Jowell said: "The London 2012 Women into Construction project is
an excellent example of how we are using the Games to blaze a trail
for equal employment opportunities.
"Not only will this programme help more women get construction jobs
working on the Games, but also make a significant contribution to
breaking down gender barriers within the industry as a
whole."
