RAE calls for upskilling of plumbers
12 January 2012

The Royal Academy
of Engineers (RAE) has claimed a lack of necessary skills could
hold back the uptake of energy-efficient home improvements under
the government's upcoming Green Deal initiative.
Plumbers in particular are failing to make the grade at present,
with a lack of qualified professionals across the UK meaning that
homeowners looking to reap the benefits of improved heating systems
under the Green Deal may be forced to put off work, the Guardian
reports.
Scott Steedman of the RAE told the publication: "The green deal
needs to be implemented very carefully or it could be just a mad
scramble for DIY equipment. It has to be done in a considered way,
to standards."
The news follows comments by Dr Paula Owen, director specialist at
PaulaOwenConsulting.co.uk, who recently claimed Brits should be
focusing on boosting their energy efficiency now, as the winter is
the time of year when the greatest return on investments can be
seen.
