Sustainable measures 'should be at the heart of planning'
12 December 2011

Any amendments to
the planning system must have sustainability at their heart, with a
focus on delivering energy efficiency improvements across the UK
and limiting the environmental impact of new developments.
Speaking at a recent Property Week webinar, Ian Wilson, head of
government affairs at the National Trust, said the introduction of
the new Localism Act will be a massive challenge for local
government, as it shifts the burden of decision-making squarely in
this direction.
However, the onus will now be on local councils to ensure quality
projects continue to take place that benefit the whole of the
UK.
He commented: "It is also about delivering good quality places both
in terms of the social infrastructure ... and also the quality of
the environment."
According to a recent report from Policy Exchange, there are
growing calls for wide-ranging reforms to the planning system to
enable the construction of new, good quality homes.
It claimed that if the government is serious about delivering
growth, Garden Cities - new, private sector urban areas - must be
developed in close proximity to existing towns and cities across
the country.
