Titanic project to create construction jobs
28 November 2008

A
titanic-themed project in Northern Ireland is set to create 600 new
jobs in the construction industry, it has been stated.
The Titanic Signature project is to cost £97 million and it is
hoped that the five-storey centre will be open to the public ahead
of the centenary of the boat's sinking in 1912.
Some 600 construction jobs are set to be created in the centre's
building, at the derelict shipyard where the boat was built almost
100 years ago, with the work set to begin January.
The Northern Ireland Executive is to fund £44 million of the
project with the remaining £53 million set to come from the Belfast
Harbour Commissioners, Belfast City Council and private
developers.
Councillor Diane Dodds, chairperson of the Strategic Policy and
Resources Committee, said: "Without wishing to pre-empt our
discussion, I think that the response will be positive, given that
this project will create 600 construction workers jobs and 250
permanent jobs.
"There is clear evidence that this will prove to be a significant
investment that will result in consolidating and growing the
Belfast tourism product."
The project suffered a setback last year when a prior proposal
failed to receive lottery funding.
