80% tenants concerned about bills
01 October 2008

Eight out
of ten private tenants are concerned over their energy bills, a new
survey has revealed.
Rising energy costs mean that there are a growing number of people
in energy poverty and increasing amounts of people worried by their
energy bills.
According to the National Landlords Association, the average UK
household pays the equivalent of a fifth of its rent on gas and
electricity bills.
As a result, the cost of bills is the second most important concern
for renters, behind only location.
Some 22 per cent of respondents said that the bills had an 'extreme
effect' on their decision.
Over three quarters (77 per cent) said that their landlord did not
care about energy efficiency measures such as installing
insulation.
However, the introduction today of Energy Performance Certificates
– which give a property an energy efficiency rating – may make
landlords pay more attention to insulation, double glazing and
efficient boilers as tenants can now easily compare
properties.
