Britain 'could be carbon neutral by 2050'
22 August 2008

Major reductions
in energy consumption are part of a Liberal Democrat strategy to
make the UK carbon neutral and a net exporter of energy.
Measures such as insulating and draught proofing the existing
housing stock could play a part in reducing the UK's need for
energy.
At the same time, the Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg, called
for incentives to create a massive expansion in the amount of
renewable energy generated.
Renewable energy is no longer a pipe-dream," he said.
"It is realistic and achievable. Just as Britain invested in the
North Sea in the 1970s to transform our energy prospects through
oil production, we must today make similar investment in renewable
technologies to harness Britain's vast renewable energy resources,
combined with major reductions in energy consumption."
The process of heating a home is one of the most energy intensive
processes in a house. According to the Energy Saving Trust, simply
installing insulation can significantly reduce the amount of energy
used.
