Design must be environmental
29 September 2008

An author
and energy expert, whose careful use of insulation in his home has
helped cut his energy use by four fifths compared to an average
house, has urged environment to be taken into account in all
designs.
Will Anderson designed his own eco-home in south London and has
pointed out that the only way to achieve zero-carbon is to
significantly reduce energy demand.
Designers and builders can help reduce that energy demand by
fitting a house with measures such as insulation, double glazing
and low-energy lighting.
Mr Anderson said: "If you're going to build anything at this point
in the Earth's history, design has to be environmental."
One town council in Herefordshire is trying to force all developers
to include energy efficiency and generation measures in their new
homes.
Leominster Town Council is asking county planners to encourage
developers to include at least one solar panel, a water butt, and
water efficient toilets in new buildings.
