Eco housing development underway in Birmingham
23 July 2008

A highly
insulated housing development in Birmingham has begun today, it has
been reported.
The Lower Shenley estate is to see the construction of 167 new
social renting and owner-occupied homes in the south of the city,
24dash.com observes.
Bournville Village Trust is behind the project, which will see all
the properties built in line with the Code for Sustainable Homes
level three.
Insulation is to play a key part in keeping energy bills and carbon
consumption low, while the installation of solar hot water systems
will further contribute to the homes' eco credentials.
The initiative will be managed by Turner and Townsend. Lorraine
Boothroyd, the firm's project manager, commented that the efforts,
along with existing improvements, will "enhance the Bournville
community as not only an exemplar of sustainable living but also as
a place where families enjoy spending their time".
A similar development is currently being undertaken in Somerset,
where five homes are being built to meet with the Code for
Sustainable Homes level five, in which the heating, lighting and
hot water systems emit no carbon.
