Government pledges to fight fuel poverty
03 October 2008

Government
minister have today said they will fight against fuel poverty which
is blighting the lives of UK citizens.
Environment secretary Hilary Benn has held meetings with energy
suppliers to see how work on efficiency in the UKs energy industry
can be improved.
Recently it was announced that there would be a £1 billion
programme launched to increase fuel efficiency for households who
were performing badly.
Environment secretary Mr Benn said: "Since that announcement the
government has launched a major advertising campaign to encourage
energy efficiency and advise people of the assistance
available.
"This has resulted in almost 57,000 calls to our Act on CO2
helpline in the fortnight since the announcement."
He added that such numbers clearly showed that people were
responding to their fuel bills rising.
A report has found that increases in consumer energy prices has had
a direct result on fuel poverty.
About 3.5 million households across the UK were thought to be in
fuel poverty in 2006.
One way to fight fuel poverty is to make sure that a house has good
quality
cavity wall insulation, thereby cutting the
amount of energy needed to heat a house.
