Insulation 'better return than double glazing'
06 October 2008

Householders
looking to make their home more efficient and cheaper to run should
turn to
cavity wall insulation before thinking of
installing double glazing, according to an expert.
Mike Malina, an energy efficiency specialist said that people whose
windows were still in good condition could generate bigger savings
by installing
cavity wall insulation rather than putting new
windows in place.
Speaking alongside green technology expert James Parkinson, Mr
Malina said that double glazing was a "myth" and a "cosmetic
thing".
He added that householders could get a better financial return on
other measures.
"For example, you can look at
cavity wall insulation, draft stripping,
thermostatic radiator valves; individual valves that you can fit to
radiators that control them individually. Those are the kinds of
things that you should be doing first," he claimed.
According to the Energy Efficiency Partnership for homes, the heat
that escapes from UK homes through roofs and walls is enough to
heat 2.2 million properties for a year.
