Insulation helps councillor save money
25 September 2008

Insulation is
one of a range of energy efficiency measures a councillor installed
in his home that helped him cut his energy bills
substantially.
Nigel Lee, Coventry's councillor for climate change, installed
15-inch thick high-density insulation in his loft to help keep the
house warm in winter and cool in summer.
On the roof, he has one of the biggest solar panels in Coventry,
which generates more electricity than an average house
consumes.
Cllr Lee also replaced his lighting with high-intensity LEDs, which
consume less energy than other light bulbs.
He told the Coventry Telegraph that in the first year he managed to
cut £600 from his £1,000 annual electricity bill and £120 from his
£600 gas bill.
The solar panels have also helped save 2.5 tonnes of carbon and the
solar thermal panels have contributed to some of the home's heat
almost every day.
"While that little green light's on I know the sun is charging my
hot water, and apart from three days of the last year the sun has
given us something towards our hot water every single day," cllr
Lee said.
"I'm no longer reliant on gas and electricity."
The Energy Saving Trust claims that installing insulation is one of
the most cost effective energy efficient measures.
