Natural ventilation scoops green award
25 September 2008

A natural
ventilation system for winter that could compliment thermal
insulation to reduce the cost and energy expenditure of heating
buildings has been awarded a Green Oscar.
E-Stack, a spin-out from the University of Cambridge's BP Institute
won the Most Enterprising New Market Entrant of the Year award at
the Global Renewable Energy Awards.
As it uses the principles of natural ventilation, no fan is needed
to circulate air, instantly reducing the amount of power used to
get fresh air into a room.
It makes further energy savings by pre-heating incoming air with
the warmth of outgoing air, meaning that no cold gusts are created,
which would reduce the building temperature and require the heating
system to work harder.
The Building Services Journal carried out various tests on the
system and concluded that, compared to a traditional system that
pre-heats air with a radiator or heating battery, E-Stack's
technology saves thermal energy of about 70 to 80 kilowatt hours
per square metre a year.
