Free Green Deal assessments for north-east residents
Individuals living in north-east England could soon be able to benefit from a range of energy-efficient home improvements following an announcement from Warm Up North.
The organisation is offering 450 free Green Deal assessments as part of the government's ongoing flagship energy efficiency scheme.
Covering the nine local authority regions of the north-east, Warm Up North will be granting these free assessments to 50 homeowners in each area, with individuals keen to take part urged to get in touch as quickly as possible as places will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis.
A Green Deal assessment normally costs £99 and involves a qualified energy efficiency assessor visiting a home to deliver a range of recommendations on areas where owners could receive savings on their monthly outgoings through green improvements.
Jon Kershaw, head of operations at Warm Up North, commented: "Through our partnership with nine of the region’s local authorities, we are looking forward to helping even more residents to benefit from comfortable homes and more affordable energy bills in the long-term."
The Green Deal has come under fire over recent months following a number of lacklustre updates from the government concerning overall take-up measures recommended to property owners under the Green Deal banner.
One of the biggest stumbling blocks to increasing the number of property owners taking part in the scheme is believed to be the unattractive rates being offered on the property-linked loans which make up the backbone of the initiative.
In order to tackle this, the government announced earlier this week it will now be rolling out an extension to its Green Deal cashback scheme, enabling the initiative to cover such energy efficiency measures as solid wall insulation, insulation for loft conversions and double glazing.
However, it remains to be seen whether this move will have a positive impact on investor numbers, as to date, less than one per cent of those who have received recommendations for improvements through a Green Deal assessment have had work carried out.
