Govt encouraged to set efficiency standards in rented sector
The government has received an open letter from a range of green bodies highlighting the need for minimum energy efficiency standards for the UK's private rented sector.
According to the UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC), regulations to promote a greener rented industry were expected to come into force by the end of 2013, but as yet a consultation on these much-needed proposals is yet to get underway.
John Alker, director of policy and communications at UK-GBC, said: "A minimum energy efficiency standard is not only crucial for upgrading the UK's poorly performing privately rented homes, but would also give a much needed boost to the flagging Green Deal."
He added delivering a firm commitment to promoting greater energy efficiency in the rented market is long overdue.
The joint statement on improving efficiency was signed by the UK-GBC, the Energy Saving Trust, ACE, Friends of the Earth and WWF.
