Pensioners worried about keeping warm in winter
08 October 2008

Pensioners
are increasingly worried about the cost of heating bills and end up
being cold instead.
Research has suggested that 25,000 elderly people will die due to
the cold this winter.
And despite the season being warmer than in the past, National
Energy Action has found that 19 per cent more people die in England
during winter than colder countries such as Finland.
Paul Bates, of Help the Aged, told Reuters: "Its not all older
people, but our estimates are that about one in four people aged 60
and over are living in fuel poverty.
"The most vulnerable people in our society are really struggling.
The basics of life are prohibitively expensive."
Together with Friends of the Earth, Help the Aged has launched
court action to force the government to do more.
Those who are worried about being too cold this winter should make
sure that their insulation is up to scratch, as statistics note
that doing so cuts large amounts from fuel bills.
