Zero carbon apartments to be built
17 July 2008

A series of zero carbon homes are to be built in Manchester, it has
emerged.
The UK's first carbon-free housing development is to be situated in
the city's northern quarter and will include a variety of energy
saving features, according to residentiallandlord.co.uk.
One of the main ways in which the apartments will conserve energy
is through the high levels of insulation that will be
installed.
In addition, energy efficient appliances and double glazing will be
placed in the apartments, while electricity will be generated by
solar power and bio-fuel and biomass generators.
The 61 flats have been designed to meet Code 6 - the highest rating
set out by the government's housing standards.
"We have been able … to devise and develop a forward looking,
aesthetically pleasing scheme that will be the first to be
classified as Code 6, one that produces no carbon dioxide at all,"
said Martin Moylan, chair of Moylan Homes, which has recently been
granted planning permission for the development.
The News and Star this week advised its readers to install
insulation as a means of cutting down on energy consumption in
light of soaring fuel prices.
