Knauf Insulation’s innovative ThermoShell® Internal Wall Insulation (IWI) system has been installed to a terraced cottage built in 1893, as part of a Green Deal project undertaken by one of Knauf Insulation’s approved installers, Energy Friend.
Colin Robinson, CEO of Energy Friend – a company that can provide homeowners, tenants, landlords and businesses with solutions and expertise to help bring down the cost of energy bills – assessed his own home under the Green Deal at the end of 2013 and began work on his property at the beginning of 2014.
“As a company that can provide Green Deal assessments, I wanted to try out the Government scheme before I actually recommended it to our customers. As my partner and I intend to stay in our house long-term, I thought this was an ideal opportunity to upgrade the energy efficiency of our property to make it more comfortable and affordable, as the energy bills have steadily been climbing and were becoming unaffordable. I dread to think what they will be like in twenty years time,” commented Colin.
“At Energy Friend, we understand the importance of upgrading the energy efficiency of a property by taking a fabric first approach, as this will ultimately reduce the amount of energy you need in the first place. For example, if we upgraded our heating system we would have saved approximately £200 a year. However by installing insulation we would save around £500 per year. We therefore decided to upgrade the heating system and install insulation to our property to help us save big money.”
As the 19th century property is constructed from solid walls, Colin had the option of upgrading the property by installing either an External Wall Insulation system or an Internal Wall Insulation system. With the front of the house portraying a period aesthetic, Colin did not want to alter the exterior. Therefore, Knauf Insulation’s ThermoShell Internal Wall Insulation system was specified for this project thanks to its excellent thermal conductivity, sustainable manufacturing process and 25-year guarantee.
Colin continued: “Along with the ThermoShell IWI system we decided to install EcoBatt between the existing rafters in the roof and we used Polyfoam ECO Floorboard for the flooring chosen from Knauf Insulation’s wide portfolio, as they have a range of products for a variety of applications.
“We particularly chose Knauf Insulation’s ThermoShell IWI system as it makes clever use of thermally engineered studs to ensure a continuous layer of insulation - the actual framework is the insulation, which is very clever!”
Specifically designed for upgrading solid wall properties, Knauf Insulation’s ThermoShell IWI system is BBA certified and provides the most effective solution to ‘whole house - low energy’ refurbishments, by delivering outstanding thermal performance and comfort through a very straightforward and easy to use installation process.
The simplicity of the ThermoShell IWI system allows a competent tradesman to become an approved installer, and to install and finish the system using a traditional plaster skim finish or dry lining techniques. No scaffolding is required and the system can be installed on a room-by-room basis, or as part of a whole house refurbishment plan.
The use of thermally engineered insulated studs (EcoStud) eliminates the thermal bridging issue associated with traditional systems incorporating timber and metal studs. The extruded polystyrene content (XPS) of EcoStuds provide a high level of thermal and moisture resistance, as well as offering a high level of compressive strength.
The system incorporates Earthwool® EcoBatts, high performance, water repellent glass mineral wool slabs, that are friction fitted between the EcoStuds to completely fill the available space and deliver benefits over other systems that use rigid insulation boards, which have the potential to cause air leakage if they are not cut and installed accurately. Overall, the ThermoShell IWI system is almost 13 per cent more thermally efficient than a timber stud system of the same thickness.
Colin concluded: “Thanks to Knauf Insulation’s products we were able to achieve a U-value of 0.30W/m2K on the walls of the property and although we had no time scale for this project, we managed to complete the whole house retrofit within eight weeks. However, as Knauf Insulation’s ThermoShell IWI system is simple to install and can be fitted on a room-by-room basis the insulation side of the retrofit only took a matter of days to complete.”
