Knauf Insulation, the UK’s leading manufacturer of mineral wool and foam insulation products, today announced a major increase to its glass mineral wool manufacturing capacity and a new production facility for expanded polystyrene insulation. The investment addresses the current shortage of glass mineral wool insulation that is expected to continue in the long-term. This shortage has been caused, in part, by the Government’s drive to meet the reduction in greenhouse gases agreed under the Kyoto Protocol.
The investment in expanded polystyrene (EPS) production at St Helens, Merseyside, will strengthen the ability of Knauf Insulation to offer the broadest range of insulation products available in the UK from a single supplier. EPS will be the fourth type of insulation material offered by Knauf and will complement the current range of Crown® glass mineral wool, Rocksilk® rock mineral wool and Polyfoam® extruded polystyrene products.
Knauf Insulation’s increase in production capacity is in response to shortages of glass mineral wool insulation caused by three main factors: increasingly stringent acoustic and thermal insulation performance targets set by the Building Regulations, the trend towards framed building construction and the success of household installation schemes within the Government’s Energy Efficiency Commitment (EEC) which it recently proposed to extend until 2011.
The EEC subsidises the installation of home insulation via the gas and electricity supply companies who are required to achieve targets for promoting energy efficiency in the household sector. The Government has identified insulating cavity walls and lofts to the recommended levels of thermal performance as being the two most effective ways of achieving domestic energy efficiency; mineral wool represents the ideal insulation material for both situations.
Although the increase in capacity is primarily intended to supply the UK market, it also provides the flexibility to support Knauf Insulation’s involvement across Europe and is a vital part of their pan-European strategy. The investment complements the new glass mineral wool factories currently under construction in the Czech Republic and Russia and follows the announcement earlier this year of a £10 million investment in the company’s rock mineral wool at plant at Queensferry, North Wales.
