Add Extra Layers for Carbon-Free Future
01 Dec 2006

As you are aware, the Chancellor proposed that all new homes should
be zero carbon by 2016 in his pre-budget statement in December.
This ambitious target reconfirms the Government’s strong commitment
to tackling climate change, a step that is welcomed by Knauf
Insulation - the UK's leading manufacturer of glass and rock
mineral wool, extruded polystyrene (XPS) and extruded polyethylene
(XPE) insulation.
Mark Andrews, managing director at Knauf insulation, comments:
“Most people recognise that we have to act now to fight the effects
of global warming. The Chancellor’s announcement is a real
challenge for the construction industry, and associated product
manufacturers such as Knauf – but a very achievable one, providing
the right action is taken.
“The starting point to achieve zero carbon homes has to be high
levels of fabric insulation to reduce the space heating
requirement. Indeed, we believe that a minimum of 300mm mineral
wool cavity wall insulation will be necessary to achieve these
ambitious targets. This combined with zero or low carbon energy
technologies will not only help reduce emissions, but also people’s
heating bills.
“We have been preparing for this for a long time now, and are ready
to meet the inevitable increase in demand not only for insulation
products, but also for expert help and advice to help fulfil these
new requirements. To this end we’ve added a number of useful
calculation tools on our website to help everyone from architects
to specifiers and builders to calculate how to achieve the right
level of insulation in any type of building or construction –
including SAP and U-values calculators.”
