Curvey Roof

Knauf Insulation - the UK's leading insulation manufacturer– and Corus have helped create a milestone in modern aviation building design at the redevelopment of Farnborough Airport in Hampshire.

Over 1800 m² of Corus’ unique Kalzip® profiled metal cladding system was used to create aesthetically beautiful areas of the airport such as the asymmetrical wing-like roof of the terminal building. The versatility of the Kalzip system allows the architect a level of creativity not achievable through traditional wall and roofing materials, departing from the traditional box shape. At Farnborough, more than 13,500 m² of curved and pre-curved Kalzip 400mm was used to form the roof; the naturally curved sheets being roll-formed on site.

Dave Cottrell, Technical Director at Corus, said: “Due to the nature of the design, it was important that the roof was as impressive as the elevations that can be viewed at ground level, and Kalzip is the only system that can achieve this. We have worked closely with Knauf Insulation to create this unique product, and the inclusion of Kalzip Roll ensures that this is not only an aesthetically impressive building, but also one that will protect the planes from the elements. It is a very versatile insulation solution which boasts an A1 fire classification and is available in a number of different lambda values – making it perfect for Kalzip.”

Knauf Insulation products are used in all Corus Kalzip® profiled metal systems as they offer high performance, lightweight insulation solutions with A1 fire resistance. Made from glass mineral wool, Kalzip Roll is light, flexible, easy to handle, cut and install, which makes it perfect for use within curved envelopes, in complex shapes and around fixings and services. Its high tear strength also makes it ideal for long, vertical ‘drops’ within wall envelopes.

Phil Rigby, product manager at Knauf Insulation, added: "Kalzip Roll is a resilient, shot-free, non-combustible glass mineral wool, and is delivered through Knauf Insulation’s innovative Supakube packaging system, which uses advanced compression technology and strong packaging materials, to ensure the product is easy to transport and store. This allows the Kalzip system to be constructed quickly on site - saving time, and therefore money, throughout the project.

“Its A1 fire classification, also means that it can potentially reduce insurance premiums compared to foam composite panels.”

Knauf Insulation is the only manufacturer to produce insulation materials for Kalzip’s innovative aluminium roof cladding system, which can be precisely engineered to meet the complex and rigorous requirements of the most challenging buildings. This is particularly important where concerns may include corrosion, noise absorption, thermal performance or condensation control.

To achieve similar results with other twin skin profiled metal cladding systems and standing seam roofs, Knauf Insulation’s Crown FactoryClad can be used for the thermal and acoustic insulation of roofs and walls. Crown FactoryClad is manufactured 1200mm wide to suit commonly used rail and bracket systems and in long lengths with the same properties as Kalzip Roll.
