EU LEGISLATION GIVES ENERGY EFFICIENCY THE GREEN LIGHT - 08.10.10
Knauf Insulation welcomes the news that from 2011, all
homes for sale will have to advertise their energy efficiency
ratings under new European Union legislation, as a further step
forward in the drive for a sustainable future.
At the moment homeowners must commission an energy performance
certificate (EPC) before putting a property on the market, but the
results do not have to be available before viewings start.
From 2012 the EU Directive will make it compulsory for the ratings
to be published upfront.
This legislation will push householders and potential house
sellers to start taking steps to make their homes more energy
efficient. It will also help the government to deliver its
plans of reducing household carbon emissions by 29% by 2020.
The most effective way of improving a home’s energy efficiency
is to install insulation. If every home in the UK had the
recommended level of wall and loft insulation, carbon dioxide
emissions would be cut by an impressive 10.8 million tonnes.
Insulating a home is also a very cost-effective energy saving
measure – insulating the loft alone could save the typical home
£1501 per year on energy bills – that’s a staggering £710 million*
as a nation!
