Jubilee Celebrations for Environmentally Friendly Insulation
21 September 2007

Knauf Insulation, the UK's leading manufacturer of insulation
products, has teamed up with specialist sustainable development
architect, the ZEDfactory and contractors Midas, for the production
of Jubilee Wharf, Penryn, Cornwall, for the property developers,
Robot Mother Ltd.
Knauf Insulation supplied 2,500m² of 100mm Rocksilk DriTherm
Cavity Slab which was installed in three layers to the £3 million
riverside development, which is intended to become a local hub for
arts and crafts. It is a mixed use scheme comprising a nursery,
bar/café, offices, live aboard facilities, external public spaces
and landscaping, 12 rented workspaces and six residential units
with external balconies. It features a wood pellet boiler and four
wind turbines and is upgradeable to a Zero (fossil) Energy
Development (ZED). The turbines will generate a proportion of the
expected electrical demand whilst all the space heating and hot
water will be met by solar thermal and the wood pellet boiler.
In keeping with the development and ZEDfactory's ethos of
creating environmentally friendly buildings and the reduction of
carbon emissions that are a cause of climate change, Rocksilk
DriTherm Cavity Slab is free from CFCs, HFCs and any other material
with ozone depletion potential in their manufacture and content and
represents a true low environmental impact product.
Speaking about the Jubilee Wharf development and the
installation of Knauf's Rocksilk DriTherm Cavity Slab, Wayne
Tipton, site manager for Midas Contractors, commented: "In
delivering buildings that potentially are Zero (fossil) Energy
Developments at a future date it is important to get the
performance of the building fabric correct. The use of mineral wool
has been proven to be a cost effective, stable, environmentally
friendly product compared to a range of other insulation choices.
We required a life span of greater than 100 years and a U-value of
0.11, with all of these difficult demands, Knauf Insulation was
ideally suited to meet these criteria."
Ian Boland, area sales manager at Knauf Insulation, said:
"Finding a material with a low environmental impact was essential
to this project. Thanks to the Midas' careful specification, and
the incorporation of a two-part wall tie system as part of the
design, we were able to deploy Rocksilk DriTherm Cavity Slab to
great effect."
Wayne added: ""From our point of view, the material itself was
really easy to work with and ticked all our boxes. The way Rocksilk
DriTherm Cavity Slab is packaged meant it was easy to transport and
store on site without becoming an obstruction. It ensured we could
achieve the exacting U-values requirements in order that the
development could meet the zero carbon aspirations of the
client."
Rocksilk DriTherm Cavity Slab is odourless, rot proof,
non-hygroscopic, does not sustain vermin and will not encourage the
growth of fungi, mould or bacteria. It contains a water repellent
additive to ensure that no liquid water is able to pass through the
slab and reach the inner masonry and is dimensionally stable under
varying conditions of temperature and humidity.
Lightweight and easily cut to size, Rocksilk DriTherm Cavity
Slab is easy to handle and install. The Slabs are compression
packed together in Knauf Insulation's innovative packaging method,
Supakube, which uses advanced compression technology and strong
packaging materials ensuring the product is easy to transport and
store.
