KNAUF EMPLOYEE SHORTLISTED FOR PRESTIGIOUS ENERGY AWARD - 18.8.11

Allan Morgans, Knauf Insulation European Energy Manager, is
among just six people to reach the final of the Energy Manager of
the Year category at the UK Energy Manager Awards 2011.
The closely fought award recognises the achievements of energy
managers who have used a range of methods to lower energy
consumption in the workplace and educate staff to engage in these
practices.
As European Energy Manger, Allan played a lead role in helping
Knauf Insulation become the bearer of the Carbon Trust Standard,
after taking action to measure, manage and reduce its carbon
emissions by more than 1,600 tonnes over the past three
years. Knauf Insulation estimates that since 2000, the glass
mineral wool sites have slashed their carbon intensity by 40 per
cent, while the rock mineral wool site has seen a 26.8 per cent
reduction in carbon intensity below the base line period of
1999.
Some of the energy saving measures include energy action
planning, staff energy efficiency awareness training, installation
of smart metering to automatically monitor half hourly energy use,
process plant improvements on emission control systems, variable
speed drives on air compressors, fans and pumps and intelligent
lighting systems.
Allan said: “Cutting carbon is a priority for us as a business
and is another step forward in our drive for a sustainable
future. By developing energy efficiency action plans we were
able to identify further areas for improvement – bringing tangible
and significant savings across our operations.”
The calibre of entries to the UK Energy Manager Awards 2011 is
extremely high, so reaching the final shortlist is in itself a
fantastic achievement. Sadly however, Allan was pipped to the
post by Paul Moran, Estates and Facilities Manager at Harper Adams
University College.
