Knauf Has Grand Designs on Energy Efficiency
01 June 2007

Knauf Insulation, the UK's leading manufacturer of insulation
products, has supported the Energy Savings Trust (EST) by providing
its products to create the energy efficient home unveiled at the
Grand Design’s Live Show in ExCeL.
The house - which features products from the Crown glass mineral
wool range in the roof, floor and walls – has been created by Bere
Architects as a way to show consumers how to save money on fuel
bills and reduce their household carbon emission. The house acts as
a model to show how simple measures, such as installing loft and
cavity wall insulation in a home, can reduce annual fuel bills by
an average of £430 and carbon emissions by almost three tonnes per
year.
For homeowners the quickest and most cost effective way to
instantly reduce their home’s carbon emissions is through the
inclusion of insulation, but some are discouraged by the initial
cost. The energy efficient home demonstrated that the cost of
installation can be saved through energy bills in less than a year.
What’s more, Knauf Insulation’s Crown glass mineral wool range is
made using a high percentage of recycled glass and processed using
techniques which mean that during its normal life, it will
typically save more than 1000 times the energy used to produce
it.
Each of the house’s wall cavities has been filled with 65mm of
Crown DriTherm Cavity Slab which is able to achieve a U-value of
0.27 (the minimum permitted in 2006’s revised Building
Regulations). Further more, this is the only range of products
which can be used within all block constructions – dense, medium
dense, standard aircrete and lightweight aircrete.
Crown Loft Roll 44 has been used in both the floor and ceiling
insulation at 150mm thickness in between the timber floor joists
and above the ceiling joists, and at 100mm thickness between the
ceiling joists. Crown Rafter Roll 32 has been used at 100mm
thickness between the roof rafters while 140mm of Crown FrameTherm
Slab has been used between the internal studwork. Every product
within the Crown range has excellent thermal and acoustic
properties and are friction fitted to eliminate air gaps, thus
reducing thermal escape.
Justin Bere, director of Bere Architects, said: “When designing the
house we approached Knauf Insulation as its products are EST
recommended, which meant we were guaranteed energy saving products.
To highlight the energy efficient modifications the existing
building structure has been coloured white while the additions are
in true colour. This works to help home owners see how many
products are available on the market which are easily accessible,
affordable and simple to install.”
Phil Rigby, Insulation Academy Manager from Knauf Insulation, said:
“Energy efficient modifications to existing dwellings can be
installed quickly and simply while achieving outstanding results.
The EST stand helps to highlight products such as the Crown
DriTherm range which is classified as Zero Ozone Depletion
Potential (ODP) and Zero Global Warming Potential (GWP) as outlined
in The Code for Sustainable Homes and EcoHomes, meaning they are
suitable for the production of zero carbon homes.”
