To make insulating masonry walls as easy as possible, Knauf
Insulation has launched the Crown® AcoustiTherm Independent Lining
System. Designed to provide either thermal and / or acoustic
insulation, the system features a layer of Crown® AcoustiTherm Wall
Roll held within an easy-to-build metal frame ready to receive a
plasterboard lining. Knauf Insulation’s high-performance glass
mineral wool gives an outstanding level of acoustic and thermal
insulation and is also non-combustible.
Effectively insulating some masonry walls can be a ‘challenge’.
Construction may be hollow block, solid or cavity wall, the project
new-build or refurbishment and the insulation for thermal or
acoustic purposes. Whatever the problem, the usual solution is to
use some form of built-up internal liner – and hope that the
insulation performance levels required by ‘Part L’ or ‘Part E’ of
the Building Regulations are achieved.
Using the Crown® AcoustiTherm Independent Lining System makes
meeting that challenge easy! The framework has been specifically
designed for the task and the insulation material used should allow
the performance levels set by the Building Regulations to be
comfortably met.
At the heart of the system is Crown® AcoustiTherm Wall Roll, a high
density, semi-rigid glass mineral wool. The sound absorption
characteristics of mineral wool make it ideal for acoustic
insulation and it also offers an exceptional level of thermal
insulation. In fact, with a thermal conductivity of only 0.032
W/mK, Crown® AcoustiTherm Wall Roll has the best thermal
performance in the Crown® Thermal Insulation range. As a bonus,
it’s also non-combustible having a Euroclass A1 fire classification
– the highest rating possible. The roll has a kraft paper and
polyethylene vapour control layer bonded to one side and this is
printed to help installers measure and cut the roll quickly and
accurately. Rolls are available in three thicknesses (75 mm, 85 mm
and 100 mm) and are either 5.40 m (75 mm thick) or 2.70 m (85 mm
and 100 mm thick) long by 1.20 m wide.
The framework for the Crown® AcoustiTherm Independent Lining System
is convenient, easy to use and very quick to assemble (in fact,
probably quicker to build than say!). Knauf AcoustiTherm Floor
& Ceiling Channel is fixed to the floor and ceiling to locate
the main uprights and Knauf AcoustiTherm Wall Channel fixed to the
wall. Adjustable Knauf AcoustiTherm Wall Clips are then located in
the wall channel, the insulation ‘impaled’ on the clips and the
main uprights clipped in place. And that’s it – the lining system
is finished and ready for drylining.
Two types of wall clip are available – Type-N for new-build walls
and Type-R for refurbishment work – and both are adjustable to
allow the face of the framework to be easily trued to vertical. The
Type-R clip has a greater range of adjustment to overcome the
structural irregularities often encountered in refurbishment
projects and also has retaining discs to ensure the insulation
material stays tight against the plasterboard. Both clips feature a
unique nylon head to prevent thermal bridging.
“From the tests and trials we’ve carried out, we know the lining
system is going to be popular,” said John Gaunt, Knauf Insulation’s
Market Manager for Building and Construction. “The system offers a
very convenient and easy-to-use method of solving a common problem.
Using a high-performance mineral wool makes achieving the Building
Regulation targets easy and the purpose built framework and no wet
processes really do speed up installation.”
