Knauf Insulation impacts flat roof design

Knauf Insulation has launched Rocksilk® KrimpactTM Flat Roof Slabs, a range of high-performance, rock mineral wool slabs specifically designed for flat roof insulation. A combination of new technologies has allowed the development of a high strength, rock mineral wool slab with a uniform density and consistent performance characteristics. With all-round excellent thermal, acoustic and fire insulation properties, the three new products further raise the strength of Knauf Insulation’s already impressive range of roof insulation products.

The new products come as a direct result of Knauf Insulation’s multimillion-pound investment at its rock mineral wool production facility in Queensferry, North Wales. New, state-of-the-art, fiberising equipment has been installed along with equipment that utilises KrimpactTM Technology, an advanced manufacturing technique that aligns the fibres formed during manufacture. The results speak for themselves!

Rocksilk® KrimpactTM Flat Roof Slabs have a uniform density that ensures consistent performance characteristics throughout their thickness. Combined with a high level of impact resistance and compressive strength, this means there are no ‘weak spots’ to threaten the integrity of any subsequently applied, waterproof finishes. (In fact, unlike ‘variable-density’ mineral wool slabs, Rocksilk® KrimpactTM Flat Roof Slabs can be installed either way up!).

Rock mineral wool is justifiably well known for its excellent thermal, acoustic and fire insulation properties. Thermally, Part L of the Building Regulations specifies an Elemental U-value target of 0.25W/m2K for flat roofs and this can be achieved using just one, 140mm thick, layer of Rocksilk® KrimpactTM Flat Roof Slab. Acoustically, mineral wool is specified by many of the Robust Details used by designers to comply with Part E of the Building Regulations in England and Wales due to its outstanding acoustic insulation properties. And, of course, being a mineral wool it’s totally non-combustible; a fact recognised by the slabs having a Euroclass A1 fire classification, the highest rating possible.

The Rocksilk® KrimpactTM Flat Roof Slab range features three rock mineral wool: Flat Roof Slab Light, Flat Roof Slab and Flat Roof Slab Extra. As the names suggest, each varies in strength to allow the designer to select the most appropriate to meeting the loads the roof will be expected to withstand.

Introducing the new range, Mark Thompson, Knauf Insulation’s Market Manager for the non-residential sector, said, “Our investment in rock mineral wool production means we can manufacture and supply a technically excellent solution for flat roofs – we’re offering a high strength mineral wool slab with no ‘small print’! Rocksilk® KrimpactTM Flat Roofing Slabs have excellent, all-round insulation properties – thermal, acoustic and fire protection – high compressive strength and consistent performance. They really do provide designers with an ideal solution for flat roof insulation – what else could you possibly want!”
