Knauf Insulation kits out new Barratts development
11 September 2007

Knauf Insulation, the UK's leading manufacturer of insulation
products, has joined forces with Allan Roofing and regeneration and
renewal specialist Michael Auckett Architects, to kit out one of
Barratt Homes' latest developments.
Barratt Homes West London division has created over 300
residential units above the Blenheim Centre's Asda superstore in
Hounslow. Knauf Insulation has supplied its Polyfoam Slimline
System, consisting of 6,000m² of 120mm Polyfoam Roofboard Extra and
Polyfoam Slimline Membrane, for the thermal insulation of the
Blenheim Centre's protected membrane flat roof. The Polyfoam
Slimline System has also been used under paving slabs on balcony
and terrace areas, creating valuable outdoor space for residents
and increasing the apartments' salability.
Due to the need for a slim, high strength and cost-effective
insulation product, Knauf Insulation's industry-leading protected
membrane system was ideal. Tested and certified by the British
Board of Agrement (BBA), the Polyfoam Slimline System provides
superior thermal performance and enables weight reduction. This
means that Knauf Insulation's tough, durable Polyfoam Slimline
System facilitates thinner insulation and reduced ballast load with
no loss of performance.
Knauf Insulation's Polyfoam Roofboard is 100% ozone friendly
extruded polystyrene rigid board, producing a thermally efficient
and lightweight roof. Highly resistant to water absorption, it can
be used above the waterproofing layer and thus is suitable for
exposure to rainwater. Polyfoam Roofboard is highly resistant to
compression, capable of handling both short and long-term static
loads.
Knauf Insulation's Polyfoam Slimline Membrane is a high
performance, non-woven polyethylene geotextile membrane for use in
conjunction with the Polyfoam Roofboard. It improves the
performance of protected membrane flat roofs by reducing the amount
of rainwater flowing between the insulation and the waterproofing
membrane. The usual impact on thermal performance by rainwater
cooling is therefore vastly reduced, so by using the same thickness
of Polyfoam Roofboard superior U-values can be achieved.
While the Polyfoam Slimline Membrane is highly resistant to the
passage of water, it is vapour permeable, so moisture does not
become trapped below and between the insulation .layer. As more
drainage occurs above the insulation rather than below it, the
floatation impact is vastly reduced, meaning even less ballast is
required.
Keith Lewis, construction executive at Allan Roofing, explains
that Knauf Insulation's Polyfoam Slimline System was the obvious
choice for the Blenheim Centre: "We enjoy a long-standing
relationship with Knauf Insulation. Aside from their products being
industry-leading, on budget and readily available at short lead
times, the service they provide is second to none."
Knauf Insulation's Andrew Tichy concludes: "With increasing
thermal performance requirements, Knauf Insulation is proud to be
at the forefront of recommending, manufacturing and supplying
compliant insulation products. What sets us apart is the effort we
put into building relationships with architects and contractors,
and it's great that we have completed another project for Allan
Roofing as a result."
