Knauf's super deck - loft decking made easy!

Knauf Insulation’s Polyfoam® Supadeck® Insulation Board is a unique product designed to solve that common headache: installing loft decking in an attic roof space. Supadeck is a laminated board made by bonding high-strength Polyfoam extruded polystyrene to a sheet of flooring grade chipboard. It provides the secondary layer of insulation and the decking itself – all in one piece. It’s loft decking made really easy!

Roof construction usually features 100mm deep ceiling joists but, to achieve an Elemental U-value of 0.16 W/m2K – and satisfy ‘Part L’ of the Building Regulations / Part J of the Scottish Technical Standards – a 270mm thick layer of glass mineral wool insulation is needed. The maths are simple: if the loft is to be decked for storage purposes, cross joists will have to be installed to raise the decking above the second, top-up layer of insulation that will have to be added. But, despite being a common problem, no solution has been available to make life easy so, for many, it’s still a time consuming, awkward and expensive job to do.

But not with new Supadeck® Insulation Board! Supadeck is a unique laminate formed by bonding high-strength Polyfoam extruded polystyrene to a sheet of P5, flooring grade chipboard. Doing so makes it much more than ‘just’ loft decking because, apart from the deck, it also provides the top-up layer of insulation and does away with the need for supporting cross joists. And, when installed over a 100mm thick layer of Crown® mineral wool laid between the ceiling’s existing joists, the combination achieves a U-value of 0.16 W/m2K.

Supadeck comes in one manageable size; 1200mm x 600mm, which means boards fit through all but the smallest loft hatches and are easy to handle within the confines of a roof-space. All four edges are tongued-and-grooved to allow the boards to interlock and form a flat deck of uniform strength. And installing Supadeck is a doddle! The boards are laid across the ceiling joists, the edges glued and the boards fixed to the joists with 150mm screws.

“Supadeck is a great time and labour saving product,” said Mark Thompson, Knauf Insulation’s Foam Market Development Manager, “…it does away with the need for cross joists and combines the two key components needed – the top-up layer of insulation and the decking surface itself – in one, unique product which makes loft decking so much easier and quicker to install.”

To support the Polyfoam range, Knauf Insulation have published a comprehensive brochure – the Knauf Polyfoam Guide – along with a series of product specific datasheets that contain a wealth of information and make for essential reading.
