NEW PREMISES ARE SCOUTS HONOUR THANKS TO KNAUF INSULATION - 27.04.11

Ide HIll

Members of the 16th Sevenoaks Scout Group in Ide Hill, Kent, are now meeting in warm and fully insulated premises thanks to products supplied by Knauf Insulation.  With a bespoke new building replacing the previous structure, the walls, floors and roof of the new scout hut have been constructed using a variety of insulation methods, including Knauf Insulation’s Internal Wall Insulation (IWI) System.

First opened in 1957, the prefab house that was previously home to the Ide Hill Scout Group was no longer big enough for the expanding group’s needs.  Urgently requiring new premises, Ian Courtneidge, Chairman of the Scout Group and member of Riley Consulting, who project managed the build, turned to Adrian Rigby, from BHD Architects to design a new structure on the site of the previous building.

The result was a purpose-built centre, delivering 30 per cent more space than the original premises.  With a tight budget gathered by almost four years of fundraising by the scout group, specified products needed to be cost effective and easy to install.

Adrian said: “After consultation with Knauf Insulation’s Technical Advisory Team, we decided to use the IWI System, as it enabled us to achieve the required U-values in an economical way.  A key consideration for us was cost effectiveness and so the centre was built using basic solid block construction, making a blown-in solution impossible.  As it was only going to be used two or three nights a week, we wanted an efficient solution that would maintain maximum heat, as we were only going to be insulating the internal surfaces.  The straightforward installation and excellent thermal performance of the IWI system really fit the bill in this case.”

Simplifying the process of insulating solid masonry walls, Knauf Insulation’s IWI System is a highly cost effective method for achieving increased energy efficiency in any type of property.  Easy to install, a competent builder can fit and finish the system using a traditional plaster skim finish or dry lining techniques.  No scaffolding is required and the system can be installed on a room-by-room basis or as part of a whole house refurbishment plan, as seen here on the Ide Hill build.

The system comprises EcoStuds - extruded polystyrene laminated to Oriented Strand Board (OSB), which are mechanically fixed to the internal wall. Earthwool EcoBatt, 75mm thick, water repellent, high performance, glass mineral wool slabs are friction fitted between the EcoStuds and faced with a vapour check plasterboard sheet. Earthwool EcoBatts fully fill the insulation zone and are in intimate contact with the EcoStuds and plasterboard, thereby preventing any air or draught movement through the system.

To complete the specification of the scout hut, Knauf Insulation Rafter Roll 32 was fitted in the roof space and Polyfoam Floorboard Extra 75mm was used to thermally seal the floor.  Combining high thermal and acoustic performance, Rafter Roll 32 is a semi-rigid glass mineral wool roll designed for friction fitting between rafters, while Polyfoam Floorboard is an extruded polystyrene board that offers excellent energy saving performance, as well as the strength and durability needed in a flooring product.

Adrian concluded: “The professional service and knowledgeable advice we received from Knauf Insulation really helped this project go smoothly.  The Technical Advisory Team was able to recommend the most appropriate solutions for each aspect of the build, making it much easier for us to drive the project forwards on schedule.”
