Perimeter Plus – the new insulation
system that is blowing all the others away

An innovative self-build project in Essex is
making full use of the thermal, acoustic and installation benefits
of Knauf Insulation’s Perimeter Plus Blow-in-Blanket system. The
Laurels, a totally unique 200m² timber frame self build property in
Felsted, Essex, incorporates a heat exchanger system for heating
and ventilation and several kilometres of data cabling as well as a
number of intricate sections and stud depths ranging from 100mm to
200mm thick. The advantage of Perimeter Plus was that its ability
to compress around pipes, wiring and other services and fittings
ensures a complete fill and thereby maximises thermal and acoustic
performance.
Self builder and owner Stan Cassels realised
that this new system was the only way to achieve the combination of
sound insulation, thermal insulation and build quality that he
required. In fact, he was so impressed with its sound insulation
properties that he not only had it installed in the external walls
and roof, he also specified it for all the internal walls and
between floors.
Perimeter Plus is a patented specialist high
performance loose glass mineral wool that is designed to be blown
into timber frame walls from the inside of a house during
construction. The product is blown in behind a translucent netting
which gives a visual assurance of a quality installation in every
area – as a comparison inaccurately cut rigid foam boards are
susceptible to air gaps hidden by tape or partially filled with
expanding foam. And, unlike blown cellulose systems Perimeter Plus
does not require adhesives or moisture meaning that working even in
a cluttered internal environment does not present a problem plus
there is zero waste and no need to allow additional time for
clean-up. As a further bonus,
Perimeter Plus is inherently sustainable as it is made from a high
content of recycled glass bottles.
As Stan Cassels explains, “One of the reasons
I used Perimeter Plus is that I wanted to be able to see where the
insulation was going and ensure that the cavity was properly
filled. I looked at the other blown-in systems that were available
and decided that I didn’t want a system that required me to put the
plasterboard on first and then blow the insulation in through a
hole. Another important reason for using Perimeter Plus was that,
with all the kilometres of data wiring and 100mm diameter air
supply and extraction pipes, as well as all the normal plumbing and
power services, using any other product it would have been very
difficult to achieve a complete fill so as to optimise thermal and
acoustic efficiency.”
The results have certainly lived up to his
expectations. “It is quite an amazing product, particularly for
sound insulation, you can hear the difference as soon as you walk
into the house,” he added.
