Rocksilk RainScreen Slab

For the thermal insulation of rainscreen cladding systems.

Description

Rocksilk RainScreen Slab is a rock mineral wool slab containing a water repellent additive, specially developed for rainscreen cladding applications.

Application

Rocksilk RainScreen Slab is used for the thermal insulation of rainscreen cladding systems.

RainScreen cladding systems typically comprise outer cladding panels that are bolted to a supporting framework of rails, which are supported by cleats fixed back to the building structure. A layer of insulation is fixed independently against the building substructure using proprietary insulation fasteners.

An airspace separates the insulation from the outer cladding panels. This allows wind driven rain to run down the back of the rainscreen panels, providing additional protection to the insulation layer.

Rocksilk RainScreen Slab is recommended for this application, as it is lightweight but rigid enough to resist the compression forces generated when installing the insulation slabs to the masonry substrate. The water repellent additive in Rocksilk RainScreen Slab also provides a further line of defence against rain penetration of the external wall.

Standards

Rocksilk RainScreen Slab is made from non-combustible inorganic rock wool, defined as mineral wool in BS 3533: 1981 and is manufactured in accordance with BSI Quality Assurance Standard BS EN ISO 9001: 2000.

Durability

Rocksilk RainScreen Slab is rot proof, does not sustain vermin and will not encourage the growth of fungi, mould or bacteria.

Rocksilk RainScreen Slab is odourless and non-hygroscopic.

Environmental

Rocksilk RainScreen Slab is free from CFCs, HCFCs and any other material with ozone depletion potential in its manufacture and content and represents no known threat to the environment.

Rocksilk RainScreen Slab's manufacture has a low impact on the environment and is classified as Zero ODP and Zero GWP.

Thermal Conductivity

Rocksilk RainScreen Slab has a thermal conductivity of 0.035 W/mK.

The U-value of a proprietary rainscreen cladding system is dependent on the degree of thermal bridging in the system. Typically 100mm of Rocksilk RainScreen Slab will achieve a U-value of 0.35 W/m2K, but Knauf Insulation advise consulting individual rainscreen cladding manufacturers for U-values appropriate for their system.

Fire Performance

Rocksilk RainScreen Slab is classified as Euroclass A1 to BS EN ISO 13501-1, Class 1 Surface Spread of Flame to BS 476: Part 7: 1997 and Class ‘O’ to the Building Regulations.

Handling and Storage

Rocksilk RainScreen Slab is easy to handle and install, being lightweight and easily cut to size.

Rocksilk RainScreen Slab is supplied in polythene packs, which are designed for short term protection only. For longer term protection on site, the product should be stored either indoors, or under cover and off the ground.

Rocksilk RainScreen Slab should not be left permanently exposed to the elements.
