Residential acoustic regulations
Resistance to the passage of sound
Noise and the need to improve standards
Noise transmitted to dwellings can detract from people’s quality
of life by disrupting sleep, causing annoyance, or disturbing
everyday activities. In particular, sleep deprivation can lead to
stress-related illness and affect performance at school or
work.
With increased housing density, the Government is aiming to
improve standards of sound insulation and significantly improve
compliance with the introduction of post-construction testing of
dwellings.
In the Code for Sustainable Buildings, increased acoustic
performance is required in the ‘health and well-being’
category.
Note: Glasswool and Stonewool provide points for Code
compliance in both the ‘Energy’ and ‘Health and well-being’
categories.
