Pitched Roofs - Celing Level Insulation

Typical specification - Pc01 - Insulation between and above joists - single layer


The whole area of the ceiling to be insulated with one layer of Crown Loft Roll One of total thickness 270mm. Width of insulation to be appropriate to the joist centres.

The insulation to be laid between the joists and to finish over wall plate on external walls. All joints between the rolls of insulation to be close butted. Maintain a minimum 25mm airspace between insulation and HR roof tile underlay at the eaves. Do not insulate under cold water tanks unless they are elevated.

Cold water tanks and pipes to be separately insulated. Loft hatch to be insulated with a minimum 100mm depth of insulation.

Typical specification - Pc02 - Insulation between and above joists - double layer


The whole area of the ceiling to be insulated with two layers of Crown Loft Roll 40*/44*/Crown CarbonZero Roll* of total thickness ......mm.

Width of first layer of insulation to be appropriate to the joist spacings and of a thickness equal to joist depth. The insulation to be laid between the joists and to finish over wall plate on external walls. The second layer to be laid at right angles to the first layer. All joints between the rolls of insulation to be close butted. (*Delete as appropriate)

Maintain a minimum 25mm airspace between insulation and sarking felt/sarking board at the eaves.

Do not insulate under cold water tanks unless they are elevated. Cold water tanks and pipes to be separately insulated. Loft hatch to be insulated with a minimum 100mm depth of insulation.

Pitched Roofs - Rafter Level Insulation

Typical specification - Pr01 - Insulation between rafters

The whole area of the pitched roof to be insulated with Crown Room-in-Roof Roll 37…mm thick, friction fitted between the rafters.
The insulation to be pushed over the wall plate at the eaves to link up with the wall insulation.

Typical specification - Pr11 - Insulation between and above rafters


Insulation laid over rafters to be Rocksilk Pitched Roof Slab, ......mm thick, located over the rafters.

All boards tightly butted and with staggered joints. Knauf Breatheline should then be laid over the insulation with the edges lapped.

The insulation and underlay to be held in place by 50 x 32mm counter battens fixed through the boards, into the rafters.

The tiling battens to be nailed into the counter battens. Crown Room-in-Roof Roll 32/37* or Crown Rafter Roll ......mm thick, to be friction fitted between the rafters.(*Delete as appropriate)

The width of the insulation should be appropriate to the spacing of the rafters.

Masonry Cavity Walls

Typical specification - MC01 - Full-fill insulation with built-in glasswool


All external walls to be insulated during construction by completely filling the cavities with Crown DriTherm Cavity Slab/34*/32* ......mm thick. (*Delete as appropriate)

The first run of wall ties to be located at 600mm centres horizontally (at a level to be decided by the specifier). Subsequent runs of wall ties to be at not more than 900mm centres horizontally, or as otherwise required by the structure, and at 450mm vertically.

All work under construction must be protected overnight and during adverse weather conditions in accordance with BS 5628: Part 3: 1985.

Typical specification - Mc03 - Full-fill insulation with injected glasswool


Crown Supafil*/ Supafil Green cavity* wall isulation glass mineral wool to be injected into the cavity by an Knauf Insulation/BBA Approved Installer. (*Delete as appropriate)

New cavity walls to receive Crown Supafil cavity wall insulation by injecting insulation into the cavity should be constructed so that insulation cannot penetrate ventilation ducts or pass through to cavities in adjoining buildings or compartments which are not to be insulated. Close fitting ducts or sleeves should be installed across the cavity to serve air bricks and other ventilation openings.

Cavity barriers should be installed at junctions with other properties and compartments, and as required by the Building Regulations. Existing cavity walls to be inspected by the Approved Installer and all necessary builder’s work carried out prior to Crown Supafil Cavity Wall Insulation being injected.

All work to be in strict accordance with the procedures laid out in the relevant BBA Certificate and the Knauf Insulation “Operators” and “Survey & Assessment” manuals.

Timber Frame Walls

Typical specification - Tf01 - Single layer insulation between studs


External wall panels to be insulated between studs using Crown FrameTherm 43*/40* /38*/35*/32*/ Slab*......mm thick (*Delete as appropriate).

Insulation to be cut as necessary and friction fitted between studs.

The breather membrane stapled*/nailed* to the sheathing and extend below the lowest timber member (*delete as necessary).

Cavity barriers and fire stops should be installed as required to meet the Building Regulations.

Typical specification - Tf04 - Insulation between studs and to exterior of sarking


Twin insulation full fill system

External wall panels to be insulated between studs using Crown FrameTherm Roll 40/35/32* ......mm thick (*Delete as appropriate)

Insulation to be cut as necessary and friction fitted between studs.The breather membrane stapled*/nailed* to the sheathing and extend below the lowest timber member (*Delete as appropriate).

Cavity formed between internal and external leafs to be fully filled with Crown DriTherm Cavity Slab ......mm thick. The lowest run of wall ties to be located at 600mm centres horizontally. Ties thereafter to be at 450mm centres vertically and at 600mm centres horizontally. All work to be in accordance with manufacturers instructions.

Twin insulated part fill system

Frame and breather membrane as above, then:

Crown DriTherm Cavity Slab ......mm thick to be fitted against the breather membrane on the face of the sheathing and held back using insulation retaining clips fixed to the wall ties.

The lowest run of wall ties to be located at 600mm centres horizontally. Ties thereafter to be at 450mm centres vertically and at 600mm centres horizontally. All work to be in accordance with manufacturers instructions.

Cavity barriers and fire stops should be installed as required to meet the Building Regulations.

Typical specification - Tf05 - Single layer blow-in insulation blanket system


External wall panels to be insulated betweenstuds using Knauf Perimeter Plus Blow-in-Blanket System. The breather membrane stapled*/nailed* to the sheathing and extend below the lowest timber member (*Delete as appropriate).

Cavity barriers and fire stops should be installed as required to meet the Building Regulations

Internal Walls

Typical specification - Iw01 & 02 - Timber stud partition walls


Crown Acoustic Partition Roll, 50mm thick*/ Rocksilk Flexible Slab 50mm thick*, fixed between vertical studs. (*Delete as appropriate) Insulation to fit snugly between studs and at bottom of the structure to ensure that there are no air gaps.

Seal all gaps around the perimeter of the plasterboard with acoustic sealant.

Alternatively, consult the National Building Specifications (NBS) based on Standard Version K10/125. It contains a set of proprietary clauses, which are edited versions written by Knauf Insulation.

Typical specification - Iw03 & 04 - Metal stud partition walls


In all …... (steel stud) partitions install acoustic insulation of Crown Acoustic Partition Roll*/Rocksilk Flexible Slab*, …...mm thick. Secure Crown Acoustic Partition Roll*/Rocksilk Flexible Slab*l at head of partition using timber batten or light steel angle. Insulation to fit snugly between studs and at bottom of the structure to ensure that there are no air gaps. Seal partition at perimeter and all service penetrations with an acoustic sealant. (*Delete as appropriate)

Ground Floors

Typical specification - Gf01 - Insulation below slab


The whole of the ground floor area between brick, block or concrete subwalls to be insulated with Polyfoam Floorboard Domestic*/Standard*/ Extra/*Super* …...mm thick and laid directly over blinded hardcore.

Polyfoam Floorboard Standard, at least 25mm thick, to be cut and placed vertically against the subwalls to the depth of the concrete slab.

The insulation to be laid above*/below* damp proof membrane, which should lap the perimeter wall DPC. Concrete slab and floor finish as specified by the designer. (*delete as appropriate)

Typical specification - Gf02 - Insulation above slab

Insulation below screed

Rocksilk Thermal Floor Slab Plus ......mm thick, to be close butted and placed over the whole area of the floor. Rocksilk Thermal Floor Slab Plus, 30mm thick, to be cut and placed to full depth of screed and floor insulation at the floor perimeter.

The insulation to be overlaid with 1000 gauge polythene, taken up and over the perimeter insulation. A 65mm thick sand/cement screed with wire mesh*/ polypropylene reinforcing fibres* to be laid on top. (NHBC recommend a D49 fabric mesh for use in floating screeds.) Floor finish as specified by the designer. (* delete as appropriate)

Insulation below chipboard

The whole area of the concrete floor to be lined with Rocksilk Thermal Floor Slab Plus, …...mm thick. All boards to be close butted.

The insulation to be (overlaid with a vapour control layer of 1000g polythene and)* covered with 18mm t&g flooring grade chipboard. (*delete as required)

Typical specification - Gf06 - Suspended timber floor

Polypropylene netting to be (draped over and between the joists and stapled to the sides of each joist*/stapled to the underside of the joists*). (*delete as required)

Crown Loft Roll 44*/40*/Rocksilk Flexible Slab* of ......mm thickness and of width to suit joist spacings, supported on the netting to fit tightly under the floor.

Crown Loft Roll 44*/40*/Rocksilk Flexible Slab* to be cut and placed to fully fill in the gap between the last joist and the perimeter wall. T&g flooring grade chipboard to be fixed to the floor joists, all as specified by the designer.

Typical specification - Gf08 - Underfloor heating

Polyfoam Tackaboard Standard*/ Extra* ......mm thick, to be closely butted and placed over the whole area of the floor. Polyfoam Tackaboard, at least 25mm thick, to be cut and placed to full depth of screed at the floor perimeter.

A single run of pipe to be fixed firmly into the insulation boards following the pattern of the pre-printed laying grid at required pipe centres until the pipe returns to the manifold system. The pipes to be tested before the screed is laid.

A 65mm thick sand/cement screed with wire mesh*/ polypropylene reinforcing fibres* to be laid on top. (NHBC recommend a D49 fabric mesh for use in floating screeds.) Floor finish as specified by the designer. (* delete as appropriate)

Internal Floors

Typical specification - If01 & 02 - Solid timber joists

Crown Acoustic Joist Roll*/Rocksilk Flexible Slab*, 100mm thick, to be placed between the floor joists. (*Delete as appropriate)
The ceiling and floor deck to be as specified by the designer.

Typical specification - If04 - Concrete beam & block floor

Crown Acoustic Partition Roll, 25mm thick, to be supported by the horizontal members of the Knauf Drywall C-Form II ceiling system. The plasterboard ceiling to be as specified by the designer.
