Products

Crown Universal Slabs are a range of semi-rigid to rigid, shot free, noncombustible, unfaced glass mineral wool slabs. They are available in the following densities:
  • CS24 – 24 kg/m3
  • CS32 – 32 kg/m3
  • CS48 – 48 kg/m3

Crown Universal Slabs are available with a factory applied bright Class 'O' aluminium facing applied to one side, subject to enquiry.

Typical Construction

For cylinders up to 1120mm diameter, Crown Universal Slab CS24 can be used. For diameters between 1120mm and 3500mm diameter, Crown Universal Slab CS32 is recommended. These slabs are sufficiently flexible for these curvatures. For diameters over 3500mm, Crown Universal Slab of any density can be used.

Note: Vessels operating at sub-ambient temperatures must have an aluminium foiladequate continuous vapour seal applied over the insulation and fixings.

Installation

Slabs are a range of The Crown Universal Slabs may be fixed by means of metal bands, adhesive or a combination of the two.

Do not over-tension the metal bands so as to significantly reduce the thickness of the insulation. On vertical surfaces, circumferential support rings should be fitted and spaced apart at distances to provide adequate support to the insulation. applied to All joints must be well butted together and vertical joints staggered on adjacent courses. In multi-layer applications, all joints should be staggered.

The insulation may be fixed to domed ends by impaling over pins and secured with spring washers or forked pins welded to the vessel.

Crown Universal Slabs shall be secured to the surface with suitable adhesive. The adhesive to be applied to cover the entire surface (it is important to follow the manufacturers instructions).

Alternatively, the insulation may be impaled over pins fixed to the surface of the vessel at the following pitches:

  • Vertical surfaces at an approximate square pitch of 450mm
  • Upward facing surfaces 600mm
  • Overhanging or downward facing surfaces 300mm.

Location of pins should be arranged so that there is a pin not more than 50mm from each corner of the slab.

All joints should be closely butted together. Vertical joints (and in multi-layer applications, all joints) must be staggered and at corners, adjacent slabs must be overlapped to the thickness of the insulation.

When using pins with spring clip washers the length of the pin to be 10mm shorter than the thickness of the insulation to avoid hot spots on the cladding. This is normally achieved by compressing the mineral wool insulation with the spring washer by 10mm and cropping the pin back to the washer.

Performance

Operating Temperatures

Crown Universal Slab can be used up to continuous operating temperatures of temperatures provided that a 100% vapour barrier is maintained. The surface temperature of the facing (when faced with aluminium foil) should not exceed 80°C.

Fire Performance

The glass mineral wool of Crown Universal Slab is classified as noncombustible to BS 476: Part 4: 1970 (1984).

Thermal Performance

Crown Universal Slabs have variable thermal conductivities depending on temperature, as shown in the table below:

Mean Temperature Thermal Conductivity (W/mK)
°C CS24 CS32 CS48
10 0.033 0.032 0.030
25 0.036 0.034 0.032
50 0.041 0.038 0.035
75 0.047 0.042 0.039
100 0.053 0.047 0.044
125 0.060 0.053 0.049

Note: Tested in accordance with BS 874: 1973 (1980).

Vapour Resistance

Where Crown Universal Slab is faced Operating with a Class vapour permeance of 0.00114g/s MN and is defined as a vapour barrier to and down to low BS 3533: 1981.

Acoustic Performance

Crown Universal Slab will provide effective control of noise, the actual . performance varies with insulation thickness and surface finish.

Other Advantages

  • Combines lightness, strength and ease of use
  • Corrosion free when used with ambient austenitic stainless steel
  • No deterioration of performance over time
  • Resilient, strong and flexible
