Knauf Insulation secures gold at the former Olympic Stadium

Knauf Insulation has produced a bespoke, single-thickness insulation solution, Soffit Linerboard Standard in 220mm. This was to help HLS Installations Ltd upgrade the thermal and acoustic properties of the service areas, as well as the heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), of The Stadium at Queen Elizabeth Park.

London’s former Olympic Stadium is currently undergoing transformation into a multi-purpose venue including events such as athletics, motor racing, cricket and concerts and of course, Premier League football as the new home of West Ham United.

“We required an insulation solution that could upgrade the thermal and acoustic performance of the HVAC and service pipe areas, as well as one that could meet the environmental demands of the entire project,” commented Kunal Vekaria, Project Manager at HLS Installations Ltd.

“From consultations with insulation experts from Knauf Insulation`s Technical Support Team and the main contractor, we initially opted for two insulation products. However, Knauf Insulation then developed a bespoke solution that met all of the requirements with just one product: Soffit Linerboard. The product, which was manufactured in a 220mm thickness, also helped to reduce engineering costs and installation time.”

Knauf Insulation’s Soffit Linerboard is a non-combustible rock mineral wool slab, which has a thermal conductivity of 0.037 W/mK and a Euroclass A1 Reaction to Fire Classification, in accordance with BS EN 13501-1.

Over 23,000m2 of Knauf Insulation’s Soffit Linerboard was installed in the different elevations of the stadium, where HVAC and service pipes are installed; from level two to the lower ground level of the West Stand.

Kunal continued: “On the lower ground elevation, we noticed that the insulation could not be affixed continuously due to the complex installation of the service pipes around that area. Indeed, any gaps in the Soffit Linerboard could cause thermal bridging. Therefore, Knauf Insulation advised us to install the insulation around the services as best as possible to avoid thermal bridging and to construct a down stand, which we also insulated. Indeed, the rock mineral wool content of Soffit Linerboard knits together to prevent open joints, which helped us to maximise the thermal efficiency of the installation.”

Manufactured with Knauf Insulation’s ECOSE Technology, Soffit Linerboard is bonded using a bio-based technology that contains a no-added formaldehyde binder and is made from rapidly renewable bio-based materials instead of petroleum-based chemicals. This delivers impressive environmental credentials without affecting the thermal, acoustic and fire performance of the products – a requirement the main contractor on this project needed.

Another requirement of the project was that all of the deliveries to site had to be made by FORS Gold standard vehicles. As such, Knauf Insulation recommended that HLS Installations Ltd used its distribution partners, Go Interiors.

At all stages, Knauf Insulation provided excellent product and technical support.”

They also gave us on site technical assistance and provided us with all the relevant health and safety and practical information we required, to help us to complete this project on time and in full, without any delays.”
